As we delve deep into the Inklings Book Contest season, we asked some of our author friends for any words of encouragement or advice for our incredible Inklings.

Stacia Deutsch, author of Girls Who Code: The Friendship Code, gives us a great acronym to remember as writers:

“Here is my advice, it goes with GOALS: G – Go for a quick walk to clear your head and get your mind flowing. O – Open a page and write down everything you think of. Don’t judge it. You’ll fix it later. A: Ask your characters questions like ‘How are you feeling?’ and ‘Why did you make that choice?’ L – Lean on trusted friends to read your work and talk about it in a kind and helpful way. S – Shine. Let yourself shine. That means don’t hold back. Just write.”

Stacia points out, “Some people say ‘write what you know’ but that never makes a lot of sense to me. I think it’s better to ‘write what you want to read.’ I love time travel so my first book was time travel.”
