Today we are featuring Inklings Book Contest 2022 finalist Kairavi Chandra. Kairavi finished 9th grade this past school year and wrote a poem called “ANGER.” One judge said that something that stands out about Kairavi’s poem is “the way anger is shown through action, sensation, and word choice. Beautifully written.” Enjoy!

ANGER
By Kairavi Chandra

anger

gives me heady power

tells me to

strut

not walk,

smirk

not smile.

I transform into someone

else

someone

braver

stronger

crueler

than I ever was.

anger

consumes me

building me up

and tearing me down.

It controls me

offers me confidence

carelessness

and recklessness

anger

courses through

my veins

turns my blood

into molten gold

it gives me

power

only I

deserve,

armor

only I

can wear.

words become

daggers

that I wield

without

a second

thought

daggers

that find their mark

every

single

time.

anger

smolders in the pit

of my stomach

waiting for a chance

to flare up

and

burn
