Today we are featuring Inklings Book Contest 2021 finalist Sierra Elman! Sierra finished 5th grade this past school year. She shared with us a poem called “The World Above.” Enjoy!

The World Above
by Sierra Elman

I wake
On Monday morning.
the sky sobs dolefully, mourning the tragedy that has occurred.
The infinite expanse of darkness above
pummels an electric yellow fist
into a tree that now stands limply.
Crash!
Another heartbreaking cry from the darkening sky.
The rage that comes from the world above
makes me feel
that the sky is a human with emotion and fear and anger and sadness.
I hear
humans hurrying to school and work.
can’t let the weather stop their day
even though it should.
Umbrellas over every head
in shades of:
red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet.
Faces hidden
from view.
But,
something tells me
that the howling downpour
wants to tell us people
to pity the world above.
