Today we are featuring Inklings Book Contest 2022 finalist Alia Ashworth. Alia finished 5th grade this past school year and wrote a poem called “This Wild Place.” Alia says she enjoys how “the narrator is so in touch with nature that they can hear every tiny rustle, see every tiny detail, feel every tiny movement, and even hear, see, and feel things that are normally impossible to, and how it shows the beauty of the world.” Enjoy!

THIS WILD PLACE
By Alia Ashworth

I listen in this wild place, I hear Nature’s call.

I listen in this wild place, and I hear it all.

I listen to the steady beat of the wren’s wild wings.

I listen to the song of bright green growing things.

I listen to the whisper of the sun all aglow.

I listen to the elm chatter, and I hear her grow.

I look at this wild place, I see Nature’s call.

I look at this wild place, and I see it all.

I look at the sunbeams, dancing in the trees.

I look at the darting of the busy honeybees.

I look at the monarchs, gliding in the air.

I look at the wild ferns, graceful and fair.

I feel this wild place, I feel Nature’s call.

I feel this wild place, and I feel it all.

I feel the wing beats of jays o’er the hill.

I feel the great pine trees, silent and still.

I feel the drip drop of rain in the lake.

I feel the earth breathe and quiver and quake.

I love this wild place, I love Nature’s call.

I love this wild place, and I love it all.

I love the fresh lilies, colors so bright.

I love the bright stars that sparkle at night.

I love the stream as it trickles along.

I love the redwoods, so mighty and strong.

I love this wild feeling as it beats in my heart.

I know, yes I know, Nature sets me apart.
