We love celebrating our Inklings Collaborating Artists‘ successes!

Today, we’re giving a shout out to Donna Barba Higuera, who recently won the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrator’s (SCBWI) Sid Fleischman Award for her novel, Lupe Wong Won’t Dance. The Sid Fleischman award is unique among literary honors because it is given for exceptional writing in the humor genre. Like Sid Fleischman himself, who won the Newbery Award and was otherwise highly honored for his ability to touch readers’ hearts and to make them laugh, Donna Barba Higuera brings both heart and hilarity to the page. We 100% agree with the SCBWI that Lupe Wong Won’t Dance is highly deserving of this illustrious award.

Lupe Wong Won’t Dance also received a 2020 Pura Belpre Honor Award, was chosen for the ALA’s Best Books for Youth List 2020, and won a 2020 Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award.

As part of her honor, Donna Barba Higuera was invited to give a donation to a nonprofit of her choice, and she kindly chose to grant funds in support of youth writers at Society of Young Inklings. We are very grateful for the gift of Donna’s support, her encouragement of our youth writers, and especially for how she inspires us to put both our hearts and our laughter into our work. We are also grateful to the SCBWI for including support of nonprofits in their award programs, which is one of the many meaningful ways their organization nourishes and develops the children’s literary community.

Thank you to the SCBWI, and many, many thanks, to you, Donna! We are delighted to celebrate with you.
