STARTING A PERSONAL NARRATIVE

What Story Will You Tell?

Teaching Objective:

Writers will learn to identify meaningful small-moment stories from their lives, as source material for personal narratives.

Materials Needed:

  • Plain paper or writer’s notebook
  • Pencil

Overview:

In this visualization game, writers will explore options and choose a stand-out moment for a personal narrative. While this video may be used as a stand alone mini-lesson, it was developed as part of our series, Spill Some Ink with Stone Soup, in honor of our collaborative writing contest with the beloved literary magazine in Fall 2019.

You’ll learn new tools and strategies to strengthen your writing craft skills, be inspired by ideas and writing by creative peers, and walk step-by-step through the process of developing a strong novel concept. You’ll walk away with at least one drafted scene, plus a complete plan to build from this solid foundation through the drafting process.
