Youth Leadership Roles

Thank you for your interest! Spots for the 24-25 school year have been filled. Applications open again in June 2025.

Who can apply?

We have two leadership teams at SYI. Each is made up of individuals, ages 13-18, who have either been involved as young writers in Society of Young Inklings in the past or those who simply have an interest in writing and a desire to be a part of these incredible groups as SYI leaders.

Member responsibilities for both teams include the following:

  • Provide regular feedback and input on how to help improve aspects of the membership experience.
  • Take part in designing and participating in various org projects (both individual and small group) throughout the year.
  • Attend regular meetings through Zoom.
  • Work independently to complete your contribution to a given project outside of meetings, when necessary (i.e. to meet approaching deadlines).
  • Attend a minimum of 75% of scheduled meetings.

One application, two opportunities to join a leadership team

Read about our two youth leadership teams below.

Youth Advisory Board

The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is a team of older teen leaders who meet monthly through the academic year to provide strategic feedback, participate in program brainstorming and development, and take on special projects that support the Inklings member experience.

YAB members are encouraged to take an active role in our community, sparking conversation through posts in our Writer’s Room, thoughtfully offering feedback to peers on the Inkwell, participating in live sessions as their schedules allow, and leading by example.

YAB members are eligible to take on special volunteer roles, including:

  • Inkwell moderator team
  • Inklings Book editorial letter team
  • Inklings Book finalist editorial team
  • Author Interview Outreach team

YAB members also present a “state of our community” report to the board of directors once a year, which includes their recommendations for how to continue to serve our mission and extend our impact.

Inklings Member Advisor Team

The Inklings Member Advisory Team (IMAT) is a team of younger teen leaders who meet monthly after our Spilling Ink teen live session. They review and provide feedback on membership content, and brainstorm ways that they might collaboratively add energy and engagement in the Writer’s Room through discussion, challenges, and other special IMAT-led initiatives.

Like the YAB, IMAT members are encouraged to take an active role in our community, sparking conversation through posts in our Writer’s Room, thoughtfully offering feedback to peers on the Inkwell, participating in live sessions as their schedules allow, and leading by example. This group will meet after one live session each month.

The IMAT nominate stories and poems to be featured on our home page, recommend special recognition for members who are stand-out contributors to the community, and participate in our award-nomination process before each year’s annual award ceremony. They also create special badges to award to writers in the Writer’s Room
