This is part of a series interviewing Society of Young Inklings’ mentors. This week we’re featuring Melody Ramie Reed.

Tell us two truths and a lie… but keep us guessing! We’ll save the reveal for the end.
  1. I was one of two finalists for a position writing computer software for the space shuttle.
  2. I was once a dedicated Dance Mom, and my daughter is now a professional ballerina.
  3. I once traveled to Japan and got lost at the airport.
What are you writing right now?

Melody’s Writing Space

My work-in-progress is a young adult story which explores what happens when a parent makes a selfish decision and the fallout it has on the whole family. Since my background is in science, my stories usually have a scientific bent. In this case, it involves DNA, a mysterious picture, and a family secret.

If you could put two books together to make the perfect book for you, what would they be?

Nancy Farmer’s The House of the Scorpion and John Corey Whaley’s Highly Illogical Behavior. I love the mixture of science and human behavior.

What’s one playful activity you use when you’re working on your writing?

I love to include sensory details in my writing, so I try to experience things as close as I can to my character. For example, if she’s eating a rainbow ice cream cone, I will find one, savor it, and write down everything I can to capture that moment and bring that into my story.

Tell us about a mentor who made a difference in your creative life.

While working towards my MFA, I had the amazing opportunity to work with a Newbery Award-winning writer for two semesters. Though he had a hectic schedule of teaching, writing, book tours and conferences, he still took the time to deeply care about my writing and developing me as a writer. He took the time to seek out just the right resource that would get me to the next level of understanding and he was always available for questions. He believed me in even when I did not.

What is your favorite food?

That’s a tough one. I will have to go with pizza. I’m from Chicago, so Gino’s East wins.

What was your first job?

My first job was as a waitress at an ice cream shop/bakery called “Sweet Tooth.” They made all the bakery fresh on site daily, and we were allowed to eat the extra at night.

What was your favorite book as a child?

I cannot pick only one, but the earliest I remember is Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O’Brien.

So, which was the lie?

I am sad to say, I have never used my passport. Nope, not one stamp on it. So, the lie is “I once traveled to Japan and got lost at the airport.” But I do have a passport, and I plan to use it soon.
