NaNoWriMo is just around the corner! Whether you’re drafting a novel this month or diving into your next story, one of the best ways to boost your momentum is to spend some extra time getting to know your character.

Maybe you already know your character’s age, their background, and whether they have a pet iguana. Even so, there are always new things to learn about our characters. The more we discover, the more possibilities our stories contain.

Especially when you’re taking on a challenge like NaNoWriMo and pushing yourself to write, write, write each day, possibilities are particularly important. A tiny detail, like the fact that your character loves wearing mismatched socks, could be exactly what you need. Those socks could spark a disagreement with a friend, which might cause your character to storm out of the lunchroom. What if, because they were upset and not paying attention, they stumbled down a rabbit hole? Or, what if they found themselves in the middle of track tryouts and were so full of anger and energy that they sprinted faster than they’d ever done before and made it onto the team?

… and all because of those mismatched socks!

You can stack up possibilities by exploring the finer details about your character. Want to give it a try? If so, here’s a character interview tool to get you started.
