This is part of a series interviewing Society of Young Inklings’ mentors. This week we’re featuring Ailynn Collins.

Ailynn and her dog, Rose

Let’s get to know you a little! Tell us two truths and a lie.
  1. I was in boarding school in the first grade.
  2. In my early twenties, I made some TV programs for a public educational channel.
  3. I used to compete in horse riding competitions – dressage and hunter/jumper.

Hmmm… Which do we think is the lie? Let’s find out a little bit more about you before we guess.
What are you writing right now?

Ailynn’s Writing Space

I’m working on a science fiction novel about a girl who moves to the moon to live with her father who is head of research at the prison colony there. She discovers that the man who killed her mother is the warden at the prison and her dad is performing questionable experiments on the prisoners.

What’s one playful activity you use when you’re working on your writing?

I act out my scenes (in front of my dogs only), so that I can ‘see’ what physical movements my characters would use to portray their emotions.

Tell us about a mentor who made a difference in your creative life.

I was mentored by someone who is very well known and liked in the field. When I finished the novel we worked on together, he referred me to his editor, who agreed to look at my novel. I haven’t heard back yet, but that referral alone made me feel like I had written something worth reading. Even if nothing comes of it, it was a huge compliment that I will always be grateful for. This mentor made me believe I have stories that are worth telling.

What is your favorite food?

Lately, I have discovered the joy of celery root!

What was your favorite book as a child?

My favorite picture book was Harry the Dirty Dog, and my favorite novel was The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. In my teens, it was The Lord of the Rings, and Persuasion by Jane Austen.

What do you do for fun?

I work with my dog, practicing for Obedience and Rally competitions, and we visit schools and libraries so kids can read to my dog. We are a therapy team.

Alright! Big reveal. Which fact was the lie?

I didn’t compete in horse riding competitions. My daughter did. I can ride, but not as well as she can.
