This is part of a series interviewing Society of Young Inklings’ mentors. This week we’re featuring Olivia Ghafoerkhan.
Tell us two truths and a lie… but keep us guessing! We’ll save the reveal for the end.
- I used to act in community theatre productions
- I can juggle
- I have five children
What are you writing right now?
Right now I’m working on a nonfiction book for teens about siblings, and I’m revising a young adult fantasy novel.
If you could put two books together to make the perfect book for you, what would they be?
Something that has the gothic feel of the adult novel The Thirteenth Tale and the fairy tale retelling skills of Donna Jo Napoli.
What’s one playful activity you use when you’re working on your writing?
I use large sheets of poster paper to outline stories on, or create maps, or write out character sketches.
Tell us about a mentor who made a difference in your life.
In the 9th grade my drama teacher, who also taught English, would read my poetry. My school didn’t have a creative writing class, so her encouragement meant a lot to me.
What is your favorite food?
I’m a pasta fan, and I love Italian food. Most of my cooking is mediocre at best, but I make a good lasagna.
What was your favorite book as a child?
I loved Little House on the Prairie and other books in that series as well. I used to act out scenes from the book in my backyard.
What was your first job?
As a teen, I had several odd jobs. I picked blueberries one summer, I babysat a lot, and I got a job waiting tables at the local Waffle House.
So, which was the lie?
I can’t juggle, I’m a hopeless klutz.
